Whale Watching
Maui is an over-wintering and breeding ground for the North Pacific Humpback Whale. Projected numbers for the migrating Whales this (2010-2011) season are over 10,000 in Maui County alone. The official whale season starts December and ends in April but whales have been sighted as early as September and October.
Hawaii's Humpback Whales travel from Alaska every winter and will stay for about 4 to 5 months. The primary purpose of this tropical destination is reproduction. Hawaiian humpbacks are both conceived and born in the islands. They are the fifth largest in size and of the most acrobatic of the great whales. Maui County receives the largest proportion of humpbacks in the islands making whale watching an absolute must while visiting the Valley Isle.
Maui County is composed of four islands: Maui, Moloka'i, Lana'i, and Kaho'olawe. Historically, however, they were all one island called Maui Nui. About 200,000 years ago, rising water levels, erosion, and subsistence of shield volcanos slowly allowed Maui Nui's valleys to flood and create the four islands seen today. The depth of channels between these islands are relatively shallow (up to 350 feet) making it highly desirable to North Pacific Humpback Whales. Calving females rely on Maui's shallow, warm, and protected waterways to help them successfully rear young before returning to Alaska and their summer feeding grounds.
